Research Interests

  • Soil and water conservation in dryland and limited irrigation agroecosystems.
  • Quantifying effects of dryland crop management and of alternative irrigation and water management strategies on the soil-plant-atmosphere systems
  • Development of best management practices for conserving water quantity and water quality in agricultural fields and urban landscapes
  • Agricultural applications to global environmental concerns including carbon dynamics and biofuel production.
Extension & Outreach

Dr. Hansen leads an active outreach education program involving farm producers, agricultural professionals, and staff from federal and state agencies on topics related to soil and water conservation and management. He also had international outreach work including agricultural projects in Russia and Afghanistan.

Courses:

  • Soil and Crop Management I and II (SOCR 420 and 421) These companion courses take an interdisciplinary approach to soil and crop management and addresses crop production from economic and ecological perspectives. SOCR 421 is a senior capstone course for Soil and Crop Science majors.
  • Environmental Soil Science (SOCR 478) Dr. Hansen team teaches this course, covering the use of prediction models for water and wind erosion.
